Aids is an abbreviation for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. This means that the body’s natural defence mechanism against infection is seriously impaired. Consequently AIDS patients succumb to infections which are not normally serious or which are not normally experienced. The outcome of AIDS is invariably fatal as there is no cure, no vaccination and no resistance to infection.
AIDS is caused by infection with a virus called the human immune-deficiency virus which is abbreviated to HIV. There are no particular symptoms of AIDS as they depend solely upon whichever chance infection affects the sufferer. Like hepatitis B the AIDS virus has been found in most body fluids but is transmitted mainly by contact with blood containing the virus. HIV is present on the blood of all infected persons but it usually takes years before they suffer any effects. Furthermore, as there are no specific symptoms, many of those infected with HIV are unaware that they have AIDS. Diagnosis is by blood test.

The report on smoking raises new worries
The most disturbing new in the 679 page report is the assertion than smoking has exacted a heavier toll in death and disease than had previously been thought. Among the findings:
Tobacco claims 390,000 lives a year, 90,000 more than earlier estimates. Two-thirds of those deaths result from cardiovascular disease, lung cancer and chronic respiratory ailments like emphysema. The average male smoker is 22 times as likely to die from cancer is a nonsmoker, double the previous risk estimate. On the bright side, the USA has made substantial strides in curtailing cigarette use. Only 29% of adults now light up, down from 40% in 1965.
But the progress has not been spread equally over various groups in the population. Smoking among blacks is higher than average. Level of education is the best predictor of tobacco use: the more years of schooling people have, the less likely they are to smoke.
Cigarette use was declining among teenagers, but has now leveled off. Children, especially girls, are taking up tobacco at a younger age. Among high school seniors who have ever smoked, quarter took their first puff by the sixth grade and half by the eighth. Restrictions on children’s access to cigarettes have weakened; many stores routinely ignore minimum age of purchaser laws.

If a patient has high temperature for a long time be becomes very weak and it is very important to give him high caloric diet. A careful nurse does a lot to help the patient to become healthy. You can treat many diseases by diet.
Прочитайте текст « Diet » и переведите его.
A person’s diet is what he eats and drinks, and it is highly important because both growth and health are affected by it. Everyone knows that without food people starve to death, and every year this happens in some countries of the world in the times of famine.
Even people who can get food, however, sometimes suffer from various kinds of illness because they are eating too much of one kind of food and not enough of another. This is because the body has many different needs and these needs require a balanced diet.
A normal healthy diet for one day is a salad, fruit of some kind, a pint of milk, fish or meat, some cheese or an egg and some bread. Apple, orange or grapefruit juice is always a good thing, at breakfast or at any other time, so is a glass of water first thing in the morning and at last thing at night.
Water is, of course, absolutely necessary to every kind of diet. About 70% of the weight of the human body is water, and a healthy man requires four quarts of water every 24 hours. However, since about 70% of most of the foods eaten is water, a large proportion of water comes from his food. The rest must be provided by tea, coffee, milk, soup and, of course, plain water.

In addition to carbohydrates fats, proteins, mineral salts and water? It is essential that the food of man and animals contain small amounts of the substances called vitamins, which the living organism is unable to manufacture by itself and which have to be supplied from other sources, namely diet. If anyone of same fifteen of more of these compounds is lacking in the diet, there occurs eventually a breakdown of metabolic processes that results in symptoms of malnutrition that are classed, at the deficiency diseases.
Vitamins are believed to belong to ancient elementary organic compounds and to exist before life originated on Earth. According Chagovets vitamins took part in the building up of as primary organism together with such “blocks” of living matter as nucleic acids, proteins aminoacids.
Like the hormones, vitamins are considered to be very potent, and daily intake of the order of 0,1 to 5 mg is 2 adequate except in the case of vitamin C of which much larger amounts are required. In addition to being “accessory food factors” necessary for the maintenance of health and indeed for life itself, the synthetic vitamins are now recognized as being valuable therapeutic agents for the treatment of deficiency syndromes and as such they may legitimately be considered as drugs.
The vitamins as a class are not chemically related, and they are classified according to their solubility and chief therapeutic effect into two groups: 1)water – soluble vitamins 2)fat – soluble vitamin group. It is known to be essential for the maintenance of normal epithelial tissue.
Vitamins A is an unsaturated cyclic alcohol. It has been concentrated and isolated from the non-saponiflable to be present in fish oil, both in the free alcohol and in the ester from. The source of all vitamin A is in the carotenoid pigments, the yellow – coloured, compounds occuring in all chlorophyll – containing plants.
In pure form it is a pale yellow oil, soluble in fat solvents, having an ultra – violet absorption spectrum. The ester forms of the vitamin have been found to possess greater stability than the free alcohol.
Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C and other are stated to belong to the water – soluble vitamin class. Vitamin B2 (riboflavine) is built up from a ribose and isoalloxazine residue, the name riboflavine being derived from the sugar component and the intense yellow fluorescence of its solution. It is of wide occurrence in, nature and constitutes a component of the flavincoenzome systems.
Vitamin C (ascorbic and acid) is essential for the normal functioning of living cell and is involved in many enzymatic reactions. It is required for the development of cartilage, teeth and bones, for wound healing and aiding the absorption of iron from the intestine. Gross deficiency causes scurvy.

Vitamins play a very important role in human health. Overdosage of some vitamins may be harmful, so people must take normal doses of vitamins. When the winter months come your food becomes poor of vitamins. Winter is the time for virus infections, colds and flu and your resistance is especially low. Take vitamins A,D,C every day. They are often called winter vitamins.
In carrots, fish oil, eggs.

Vitamin C in cherry, orange, lemon, and vegetables.
to increase resistance to infection. It helps to recover after illness. Take it daily.
Vitamin D in milk, eggs, fish, yeast.
to help the body in formation of bones and strong teeth.
Vitamin E in soya,fruit.
to improve poor blood circulation, in treatment of thrombosis, varicose veins.
Vitamins are special substances that the body needs, along with proteins, fats, carbohydrates and minerals. Vitamin A is needed for healthy eyes and is found in fish-liver oil, egg yolk, butter, green vegetables and fruit.
Vitamin D is needed for healthy bones and for protection against rickets. It is found in very small amounts in egg, butter and fish. We get most of our Vitamin D from the sun.
Vitamin C protects against scurvy and is found is oranges, lemons, tomatoes and green vegetables.
Vitamin B is present in milk, eggs, liver. It is needed to strengthen our nervous system.
